My branch of the Lutge Family
Today's a good time to write about my immediate Lutge family as my Mum, Beryl, was born 90 years ago - 27 March 1928.
Beryl was the second child of Kelvin Walter (Kel) Lutge and Ethel Lillian Webb-Wagg. Kel and Ethel married in 1921 at St Peter's Church of England, Neutral Bay.
Kel served in the First World War and, after his return, was employed by the Department of Mines as a Warder and Lighterman at the Middle Harbour Powder Magazines. By the early 1960s, Kel was the officer-in-charge of the Powder Magazines. He left due to ill health and died in 1964, aged 64. Kel's on the right of the photo.
Beryl's brother John Walter (Jack) was born on 19 August 1922. Here's Beryl with Ethel and Jack and Ethel's mother, Josephine, in the background at their home, 82 Gerard Street Cremorne. Their home was build on land sub-divided from the parcel of land owned by Kel's parents, John Henry and Matilda Lutge, and was completed just in time for Beryl's arrival. When Beryl was 10 months old, her grandfather was drowned in Middle Harbour Sydney and Matilda sold her home shortly after.
27 March 2018 has been a day filled with memories!

Gerard Street was the centre of our family life and the home stayed in the family until Ethel died in 1989. Kel grew dahlias and hosted the best fireworks display on Empire Night. All fireworks were tested at the Powder Magazines. If they were too dangerous or loud to be sold, they made their way to the Gerard Street display! This photo shows Beryl amongst Kel's dahlias.
Spending time at Balmoral Beach was the family's favourite pastime. Kel's uncle, Dinny Lutge, was the beach inspector. Apart from his sporting achievement, Dinny was a hero in our family because he found Ethel's engagement ring when it was lost in the sand.
Prior to the start of the Second World War, Jack met a young Frances Goldene. They went on to marry in 1944. Jack passed away in 2013, aged 90.
During his early day's in the Army, Jack met Francis James (Frank) Woodlands. When the boys returned home on leave, their families got together. Beryl met Frank when she was 14 and he was 20. They married in 1952. Frank died in 2010 and Beryl died in 2014.
