150 years since the death of Ann Winton (nee Richards) on 29 February 1868

Ann is the many times great grandmother to descendants of John Henry Lutge and his wife, Matilda Winton.  Ann was Matilda's mother - Ann is my 2nd great-grandmother.

We talked about Matilda's birth family back on 31 December 2017 - the 80th anniversary of Matilda's death. Press here to link to that post.

To recap, Matilda was the youngest child of Henry Winton and Ann Richards.  Henry was from Germany and Ann was from England - possibly Devon or Cornwall.  We can't find any record of Ann'e immigration but she arrived in the young colony in the mid 1850s.  Ann's parents may have been John Richards, a farmer, and Mary.  Ann was born in the 1830s.  As you can see, this is all very sketchy.  I'm thinking that genetic genealogy might give us the breakthrough, in time, to find out more about Ann and her birth family.

Henry and Ann married on 16 April 1859 at the Scots Presbyterian Church in York Street, Sydney.  Here's an article from the Sydney Morning Herald at the time of the marriage.  You will notice the difference in Henry's name but this is our Henry and Ann.   On the marriage certificate, Henry's occupation is shown as butcher and Ann's as a domestic servant.  From the birth certificates of their children, we know that Henry was able to sign his name but Ann signed her name with "X".

Those of you who are familiar with Sydney will know the site of Henry and Ann's marriage.  As you leave the Sydney Harbour Bridge and head towards Wynard, you pass Scots Presbyterian Church on the left and the old church was located in the same area.

On 16 November 1859, their first child, Fanny, was born at Cabramatta Saw Mills in Liverpool. The birth certificate shows that Henry is a butcher. Fanny died on 4 April 1860 at Bakers Lane (off George Street), Sydney. Henry was working as a labourer at the time. The cause of death was recorded as "debility". Fanny was buried at Camperdown Cemetery on the day of her death.

The other four children survived to adulthood-
  • John Henry (1 February 1861 to 7 August 1933),
  • William Henry (17 November 1862 to 28 July 1948),
  • Annie (14 April 1865 to 8 October 1935) and
  • Mary Alice - our Matilda (16 January 1868 to 31 December 1937).
Ann died on 29 February 1868 when Matilda was about 6 weeks old from complications after the pregnancy.  The family were living at 19 Henrietta Street, Chippendale at the time.  Ann was buried on 02 March 1868 at the Church of England Necropolis, Rookwood.  Ann'e death certificate shows her age as 29.  However, it seems more likely that she was in her early to mid 30s from the age shown on her marriage registration and the time she was in Australia.

So the search goes on for more information about Ann and her family and to locate her grave site at Rookwood.
