Patrick Walter (Paddy) Lutge (abt 1867 to 1936) - The second child of Peter Benson and Mary Lutge
Exploring family history always presents twists and turns. However, I've struck a puzzle very early in covering the children of Peter Benson and Mary Lutge.
After a thorough search (including multiple spelling of the family name), I've only been able to locate birth registrations for two of the ten Lutge children, John Henry (the first) and Peter Benson jnr (the fourth). All ten children and their ages are listed on their parents death registrations. When all else fails, you purchase a transcript of a birth, death or marriage registration in the hope of getting some useful information. So, the transcript of Peter Benson jnr's arrived and what a surprise!
Just over four years after the birth of John Henry, Peter Benson jnr was born on 16 July 1870 at Cumberland Street, Sydney. Peter Benson snr is the informant on the registration. His occupation is shown as stevedore, aged 33 from Denmark. Mary is shown as aged 24 from County Donegal. Dr Eichler is again present at the birth. The surprise - previous issue is shown as 1 male living! At this point, I can't provide any explanation of this but the search will continue....
So based on the information in Peter Benson and Mary's death registrations, it seems that Patrick Walter (Paddy) was born about 1867. He moved with his family from the city to Mosman. Paddy lived in the family home at Military Road Mosman after his parents death with his seven younger siblings who ranged in age from 17 to 5. The third child and oldest daughter, Mary had married in 1889 (the year of their mother's death) and the oldest child, John Henry, married in 1891.
On 09 October 1895, Patrick married Jessie Mary Theresa (Theresa) Samora at St Clements Church of England, Mosman. Theresa family name is another with multiple spellings - Zamora, Samora, Seymora, Symoria! I use Samora as the street where Theresa's family home was located is now called Samora Avenue, Cremorne.
Another transcript arrives, this time of Paddy and Theresa's marriage registration. It shows that Paddy, an engine driver, was 28 when he married - supporting his birth about 1867. Peter Benson Lutge, a stevedore, is shown as his father and Mary Bonnor as his mother. Theresa was born in 1867 at Middle Harbour and she is the second of three children of Francisco (Francis) Samora, a quarryman, and Mary Ann Lovell.
The witnesses at the marriage are Lucy Rose and G Williams and the minister is Ernest C Beck.
